I Don't Like Flies

I'm going to take a page from Lori's book and write a little character summary for my one South African reader, Wes.

Here are some facts about Wes. His real name is Lester Ware Preston IV. This cracks me up. He is also half Icelandic. This also cracks me up. He has been arrested three times (but don't worry, his record doesn't show any of that), and once peed all over a police station bathroom only to get his handcuffs taken off so he could scrub the walls down. He is also three times my size and is afraid of flies. But he has a pond at home with fish and turtles.

I think the following picture sums him up pretty well.

We can end on my favorite quote of the day: "Fuck dude, why aren't there otters here? Otters are fucking silly."

Soooo Syrup

Cape Town is right on the water, so naturally, we HAD to go on a booze cruise. Or more accurately, a "Champagne Sunset Cruise." So we neglected to eat dinner, piled onto this little boat, and drank ridiculous amounts of champagne. Sorry if I sent you incomprehensible text messages.

Zakumi

Zakumi may be my favorite thing about the world cup. He is this adorable little yellow leopard with green hair and is the mascot. And I have spent basically my entire time here (as of last week) looking for my very own Zakumi.

And then I discovered the Fifa store, home of all things with Zakumi on them. I went crazy. See: my new hat.

Happy Bastille Day!

I think this picture alone sums up the day.

Nelson Mandela

Our trip to Robben Island!

We started off the day at the waterfront, tried to take a picture, and was joined by a very enthusiastic world cup fan.

So then we got to Robben Island, which was really beautiful. By the way, Robben Island is where the political prisoners were sent during apartheid. Including Nelson Mandela.

And then I got locked up.

Charly's Bakery

So I discovered that this bakery is basically on my way home from work.... kind of... if I walk a little bit out of the way. But it is so worth it. It is my new heaven. Although, I may die of sugar overdose.

It's going to be a beautiful sparkly neon death.

This Time For Africa

Ahh World Cup madness in South Africa! HOW MUCH FUN IS THIS.

So the first weekend we got here, we watched the Netherlands game at the FIFA Fan park which is right on the water overlooking all these super pretty mountains and watched with basically everyone who wasn't at the game. They had a live band and a crafts show and a soccer tournament and shops and food and beer and cider and then the Netherlands won and everyone was happy.

So then! Mike and I actually WENT to the game! We saw Argentina vs Germany (0-4..) and to get there, you need to take this mile long walk with EVERYONE else going to the game and it was absolutely PACKED. Mike and I made it in record time because we bobbed and weaved and dodged and didn't stop at any of the million little shops along the way.

AND THEN! We arrived! The stadium is actually super pretty and just pops up out of nowhere and is right down by the water and is covered in sound proofing so that all the poor poor residents of Cape Town don't have to listen to vuvuzelas all day long. Also, side note- the stadium only had two screens. No score keeping thing, no clocks, no nothing. Just two pretty medium sized screens that didn't show any replays. Welcome to Africa.

Can you see ALL THE BLUE for the stupid Argentina team?

Also, the only two songs I've listened to in the past six days have been Waving Flag and Waka Waka. Look them up. They are perfect.
